Eden Ranch Internship
|
|
After taking a course or workshop, many of our students like to stay for a few extra weeks and learn about what goes into operating a self-sufficient horse farm. The internship program at Eden Ranch is a great way to experience firsthand what living on a small-scale sustainable ranch is like, while practicing the techniques of our natural training methods. Every day on our ranch brings many different projects, some new and many on-going. Guests have the possibility to be part of many of these activities and learn about troubleshooting in situations where resources are lacking. This is a great way to gain the personal experience of living on the island, learn a new culture, a new language, and a new way of life!
General farm maintenance and routine is key to operating a ranch that has animals and gardens, especially in the tropics. There are always projects that need tended to like painting fence posts or assisting in repairs, cleaning up the palm fronds and making sure the brooks are free of debris so that they can flow properly. Also weeding, digging, planting, pruning and leaf raking are all examples of what is done daily here. Guests gain a real, living experience of what is involved in maintaining a Caribbean ranch and how it is managed.
Interns will also get an inside look at what a tropical paradise Eden Ranch is becoming. Be involved with growing different types of bananas and how we propagate them. Enjoy learning about sugar cane and its rich history here on the island. Be a part of our own soil making operation. Learn composting management and why it works. Assist and help with our pineapple patch and experience all the different growth cycles from propagating a crown top to harvesting.
You can also learn the methods of crop rotation and why it is so important for healthy, nutrient rich soil and continued sustainability for the future. Participate with planting new fruit trees on the property and the maintenance of others. The horses at Eden Ranch are fed a special nutritious grass that we ourselves plant and grow. Interns may have the possibility to learn about this process if they choose so, by helping out with land preparation, cutting propagation, planting, and even harvesting.
Interns will be assimilated into our daily life and may be required to assist in all the activities that can happen on the ranch. Work will be geared towards your strengths, however there are many times that you will be pushed outside your comfort zone. But, you will leave the ranch with a plethora of knowledge and expertise, becoming an expert in small-scale farm operation. In addition, plenty of opportunities will present themselves to enter into and enjoy the company and friendship of the herd. Day by day, you can spend time observing and learning about the horses' way of communicating. Participating in their daily training is an amazing adventure and every minute spent with them is a precious and profound educational experience.
